THE APPEARANCE
Standing at five feet, ten inches, Kaiden falls on the tall side of average in height. His hair is a medium shade of brown, leaning towards the darker end of the spectrum. He tries his best to maintain a neatly groomed appearance, and so keeps his hair cut short and neat. Rarely does he allow his facial hair to grow to anything more than a stubble, and his knife has cut more hair than undead. His eyes are a dark brown, almost the exact same color as his hair. Several scars cross across his body, a result of several incidents. He also possesses three tattoos, all of which he received after the outbreak. The first of these is the words "The Activity" written across his chest in black stylized font. The second is a Latin cross on the back of his right hand, with the longer side of the vertical crossbeam pointing towards his arm. The third is located on his left shoulder, and simply reads "Alizabeth Inshabel - 1984-2012."
For clothing, Kaiden is usually seen, without fail, in the tattered remains of a black military uniform bearing the insignia of an obscure branch of the United States Army. Though long since having ceased to be necessary, or even remotely acceptable as a uniform, Kaiden keeps it as a sort of symbol of reassurance. It has certainly seen better days, and has obviously been repaired other, non-military issue clothing in places. Despite trying to dress more or less ina manner like he would have done pre-outbreak, more casual elements break through. The sleeves on his jacket are usually pushed up and bunched up at his elbows, and he wears a pair of wristbands as well as fingerless gloves. Around his neck, Kaiden still wears his dog tags on a chain, next to which dangle a pair of wedding rings.
THE PERSONALITY
Kaiden is a generally likable enough person, who tries his best to keep the mood light despite the danger everyone faces each day. Stemming from his time spent in the facility, the use of humor and conversation are some of the only things keeping everyone from going insane. However, despite, generally trying to carry on as if nothing has changed, Kaiden is a rather depressed individual. He's watched society decay before his eyes, and, even worse, he knows that he was one of those who had the opportunity to save everyone, if only the team he was with had worked just a little bit faster. He's watched his friends and family be ripped to shreds by the infected. Of course he's not exactly the most cheery person inside.
But he knows that its selfish to show it. After all, he's not the only one who's lost someone.
Since he left the facility in Vermont with his companions, Kaiden has developed an obsession with several items which he brought with him in his escape. His uniform, in particular, is one of the more obvious examples. Kaiden cannot bring himself to abandon it, despite it being in a state of disrepair such as it is. Being in that uniform makes him feel safe, and it makes him feel like he's still a part of something bigger. Bigger even than the community he finds himself in. Another item of note is the chain around his neck, which carries his dogtags, and the wedding rings that belong to himself and his wife. That chain has not left his neck since the evacuation of the facility, and he gets extremely defensive and aggressive when people ask to see the rings. They are literally the only thing he has left from his wife, and he cannot deal with them leaving his person.
When it comes to the other people of the community, Kaiden tries his best to integrate himself with them. He has formed many friendships with those within the walls, and enjoys each of their company immensely. However, the truth is, the people who come first and foremost are those who he led to safety, and is liable to be biased in their favor when discussions come up. His loyalty to them is such that he would absolutely be willing to endanger the greater community if it ensured their lives were spared... something which he has done a great deal to hide. As far as anyone else is concerned, he's simply a hardworking, respected member of the community.
THE HISTORY
NATIONALITY: American
Born in the town of New Bern, Kansas, Kaiden was the first child of Jason and Abigail Inshabel. Being from a small town in the middle of nowhere, Kaiden spent much of his childhood between school and trying desperately to fend off the boredom that seemed to find every kid on one level or another. For the most part, however, he managed to keep the trouble he got into on a manageable level, and the few times he was caught doing something stupid like street racing, the local sheriff and his deputies would generally let him off the hook. After all, what else was a kid his age supposed to do?
By the time Kaiden graduated high school, he was absolutely tired with his hometown, and wanted nothing more than to head out into the world and live his life the way he wanted to. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't so simple. The job he held at a local grocery store wasn't exactly bringing in the money, and his parents, though well off, weren't exactly able to hand him over a lump of cash for him to go out and explore thanks to having two other children they had to take care of. And, even if he had the money, it wasn't a realistic expectation to be able to just jump out into the world on his own. What Kaiden needed was qualifications. And so he decided he would go to school.
However, with no idea how he was going to pay his way through college, and unsure if he had a good enough record to try for a scholarship, Kaiden wasn't sure where to begin. After asking his parents for advise, Kaiden's mother mentioned that perhaps what he should do was join the military, and utilize one of their programs to achieve his education through them. Realizing that he could gain a complete scholarship from the Army were he to join and go to school, Kaiden took this route, applying for and receiving a scholarship towards a biomedical sciences degree; something which he thought would come in handy in the real world.
Upon graduation in 2002, Kaiden entered into active duty in the Army as a Captain, as detailed in the scholarship agreement. Mere weeks after assignment, his unit was activated and shipped overseas for Operation Enduring Freedom. Despite the fact he was now working in a war zone, Kaiden found himself oddly enjoying the experience. As a medical officer, he did not partake in any front line action, which, although slightly disappointing, was something he was happy for. He was much more at home working with the wounded than he was on the front line.
In 2006, Kaiden's mandatory military service ended, and he was left with a choice. He could either depart the Army, his degree in hand and paid for in full, or he could continue in his career as a Army medical officer. Though his original intention eight years prior had been to use his service as a stepping stone, Kaiden had found himself at ease in his place, and so decided that he would continue his service... only this time, he was going to try to get a bit more training. So it was that Kaiden found himself applying for training to join the Army Special Forces, in an attempt to further his skills.
Upon acceptance and the completion of his training, Kaiden was assigned to the 3rd SF Group. For the next several years, Kaiden drifted between spending time in the United States and being sent overseas, depending on his unit's rotation. On several occasions, he found himself in full combat situations. He quickly realized that being a member of the Special Forces wasn't exactly as glamorous as he had once imagined, but Kaiden found himself satisfied with his duties. Though he certainly disliked killing people, Kaiden still enjoyed his service. He had found his calling.
In the early months of 2011, Kaiden found himself approached by officers from a unit he hadn't had many interactions with: The Intelligence Support Activity. Though he knew what they were, and had taken part in operations that the ISA had performed information gathering for, he knew little about them. These officers explained that he had been selected from a group of other SF officers with additional training to be assessed for duty with the ISA, should he accept the offer. Needless to say, Kaiden accepted, and found himself undergoing additional training, this time in more investigative skills.
With his ISA training complete, Kaiden was transferred from his unit and was assigned to assist in intelligence gathering operations in the Middle East. Despite it being quite different from what he had previously done, he found himself excelling in this environment. Over the course of a year, he assisted in intel gathering for several operations, and was a member of the ground team on a few. However, his knowledge in biomedical sciences had him placed in more of a support role for much of his time with the ISA, so it wasn't often that he was placed into the thick of things himself.
Around February of 2012, Kaiden found himself in a much different situation. Seemingly from out of nowhere, his entire team was recalled from the Middle East, with no explanation whatsoever. Instead of being brought to D.C. as was to be expected, the entire team, alongside several other units of Tier-One operations soldiers were shipped to a US military research facility in the hills of Vermont. Upon their arrival, they were finally informed of the circumstances behind their sudden reassignment: Washington D.C had just suffered from an outbreak of a disease of so-far unknown origin, and the government was trying figure out someway to stop it.
Kaiden, due to his area of study throughout college, was reassigned from his ISA team alongside several of his fellow operatives and brought in to work with the military scientists currently stationed in the Vermont facility. He was tasked with attempting to find a way to either cure the disease, or stop it from spreading... with the secondary goal of figuring out how it worked. Unfortunately, the research team ran into obstacles practically from the onset of their work. Though they had samples of the disease, live test subjects were the easiest and most simple things to work on. The problem was, those 'live samples' had a tendency to attempt to murder the scientists every time they needed to run tests on them. Kaiden, for one, was not exactly big on the idea of getting infected by these creatures, and neither were the other scientists.
In just under a month, however, cure development was completely sidelined. The disease, with absolutely nothing working to stop it, ran rampant, and quickly traveled across the United States, and as time went on, overseas. All funding and communications with other installations were cut off one by one as the outbreak spread, until the Vermont facility was left completely alone. Without direction from
their superiors in D.C, and communications down, they had absolutely nothing to go off of. And so, the cure plans were scrapped.
There weren't enough people left to cure anyway.
Instead, the primary goal of the facility became 'survival.' Having gathered the family of most of the facility members at the location to keep them safe during research, there was a large number of people and not enough supplies to keep them all alive. As a result, after about two months of living sealed off from the rest of the world, the facility opened up their doors and began to send out search teams to begin recon on the surrounding area, and gather as many essential items as possible. Luckily, the facility's location in Vermont meant that they didn't have a high density of people in the area, which made navigating the infected much easier. Unfortunately, it also meant they had to move farther to gather more supplies.
Casualties were inevitable.
Despite this, however, things went relatively well. With just over two hundred individuals behind the wall of the facility, they were able to go about life as normally as possible, albeit in a corpse-infested nation under military rule. It wasn't ideal, but it was the best that could happen. The fact that there was still good things to look forward to kept everyone sane. For Kaiden, these good things were love. The daughter of one of the facility commanders, a woman by the name of Alizabeth Daviks, had fallen in love with him, and him with her. After a brief but intense romance, the two of them were married, and Kaiden was happy. They had food, they had medicine, they had protection, and he had Alizabeth. Despite all the problems that were coming about, he was still happy.
In mid July, however, things took a turn for the worst. During one of the routine searches for supplies, an entire patrol went missing in the hills surrounding the facility. In order to find them, a larger group of soldiers were sent out to discover what had happened to them. When this group came back, they were few in number, and most of them were supporting minor injuries. When asked what had happened, their reply was received with great alarm: They had found a horde. More specifically, a horde had found them.
Realistically, they could have held against the horde. There weren't enough within it to prove a real threat, considering the population of Vermont wasn't as high as it could have been. With the addition of their weaponry and skills, the defenders could have easily held their own. Unfortunately, they didn't even get the chance to.
While in lockdown, one of the scientists became contaminated. How, nobody could say, much less why he had begun work regarding the virus without assistance. All anyone in the facility knew was that one moment, they were safe. The next, the science team on one side of the facility was dead, and there were zombies in the limits of the facility. The security team tried their best to fight off the zombies which now were inside the walls, but they were taken by complete surprise. With the majority of the men busy with guarding the main walls, it was awhile before news even spread they were under attack in their inner sanctum.
And by then, it was too late.
The guards on the wall suddenly found themselves firing on the grounds behind them, and with their attention turned away from the wall, the gate was left unguarded. In the confusion, the entrance to the facility was breached, and the outside horde was able to gain entrance, completely scrambling the facility's defense plan. After awhile, any organized resistance was crushed, and the heads of the facility ordered a full-scale evacuation of the premises. Needless to say, everyone rushed to comply.
Unfortunately, by the time they tried, not everyone was able to get out. Many of the civilians were already turned, and several of the soldiers had been bit and had hours before they were going to turn. Kaiden was one of the many to have their loved ones taken from them in the fighting. While trying to locate his wife, in order to get her to the evacuation convoy, Kaiden found her... feasting on the remains of one of the soldiers. As expected, Kaiden was absolutely devastated, and it was all he could do to force himself to pull the trigger on his rifle to end her.
With his wife dead, and the few people still uninjured readying to make their push to escape, Kaiden turned tail and ran to the convoy, stopping only to take the wedding ring from his dead wife's hand.
The convoy of survivors, now numbering in only a few dozen, rode out into the night, bringing as many supplies and they had managed to load onto their flat beds with them. After a quick head count of those who remained, it became apparent that most of the leadership was gone. The science team was almost completely wiped out, the medical officers were gone, and the facility's commanders had been some of the first to die. Kaiden was the highest ranking officer present, and so those under him placed him in command, despite his protests. "Rank is rank" they said. "Its all we have left."
Unsure of where to go, Kaiden led his charges southwest, towards New York. Finding absolutely nothing except for even larger hordes of infected, Kaiden's convoy kept going, until they reached Pennsylvania. While camped out in the wilderness, they encountered scouts from a community by the name of 'Henley Falls.' Though slightly suspicious of there being another community which somehow managed to thrive, especially without the assistance of trained military forces, Kaiden and the other refugees were surprised to find that not only was the community relatively safe, but that they were welcomed into it (after passing the mandatory examinations, of course).
Once accepted into the community, things gradually went back to normal for the facility refugees. The civilians acquired jobs to assist the community, while most of the soldiers were given positions as hunters and law enforcement officers. As a token of good faith, Kaiden turned over the supplies his men had brought with them to the Sheriff to distribute as necessary. Kaiden, being accepted as a Law Enforcement officer, has taken to ensuring those who had accepted his command were taken care of in the new safe haven the best he can. Though he assists the community as a whole, he can't deny that he still feels biased towards those who made the journey with him... after all, they are his brothers and sisters in arms.
And even though the sheriff is in charge in Henly Falls... well, lets just say there's another man who has followers in town.
