The infected were making their way towards the community of Henley Falls. That's what the hunters had been told by law enforcement that afternoon. The hunters of the community were on stand by for the majority of the time every day. Even if they didn't have a specific mission assigned to them that day, there was still a high chance of something coming up. Today, a horde of the infected had stumbled upon the barrier that kept them away from the inhabitants of Henley Falls and a few hunters were being sent through the gates to eliminate the threats that they faced almost every single day.
Whenever Cole hadn't been assigned a mission, he often found himself wandering aimlessly around the streets of the community. Doing so, allowed him to center himself and bring his mind back down to earth...or what was left of planet earth, anyway. After everything he had seen and after everything he had done in the past few months, Cole sometimes felt as though he was going crazy. Sometimes he just needed to take a time out and remind himself to keep his mind on the present and forget about the past. He also needed to remind himself that he was still alive to not only protect his sister, but to also help ensure that what was left of the human population still held on to their humanity. All the inhabitants of Henley Falls had lost all the elements that had made up their previous lives, but it was up to them to focus on their futures, whether that meant a brighter future or not. Surviving and moving forward was all they had left now.
It took law enforcement a little while to identify Cole's whereabouts, but once found, it didn't take long for him to climb into the back of an army truck that they had salvaged on one of their missions and making a stop at the supply center to get geared up, before making his way towards the community's main gates. When he arrived, he jumped off the back of the truck with ease, finding that most of his fellow hunters were already there, ready to go.
The hunters paired off, being let through the gates two by two. Cole would be pairing with Elizza Holloway for their mission. Being just as stubborn as he was didn't make Elizza his most favorite person to work with, but she did have some mean hunting skills...not that he would be telling her that anytime soon. "You ready, Blondie?" Cole asked her rhetorically, his tone casual as if he were waiting in line to enter a conference room full of his superiors at some corporate job, rather than exiting a haven of safety to slay a horde of zombies that threatened to make him (and all that was left of humanity) one of them.
Cole had been forced to adapt to hunting the infected from the very beginning, he found that pretending that his job was just like any other every day job, kept his mind in a stable state. He didn't allow himself to think about the fact the infected were once people who had lives of their own. He only viewed them as a threat...a threat that needed exterminating and that's how he got by, by emotionally detaching himself from the situation.
Once outside the perimeter, Cole cocked his pistol, preparing it to fire when necessary. For back up, he carried a second gun on his belt with extra ammo, as well as a machete on the other side. He also carried a back pack filled with necessities (such as water, food and a flashlight), as he wore a pair of jeans, combat boots and a khaki green camouflage jacket. "Let's go." He spoke softly, directing his words at Elizza as they headed into the woods. The casual air about him that had been present on the other side of the fence was long gone, it was back to business now.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] elizza saw this coming. they were threatened everyday by roamers from an oncoming horde. sure the walkers were backed up every week from all of the hunters ridding of the few that found their way towards henley falls. however today, the hunters were being summoned to eliminate the horde that was easily anticipated. luckily the guards had caught up with a few signs of the walkers, alerting law enforcement and eventually the news came to the hunters. the fact that their job was to be thrown into what's left of the world to rid of the walking dead not only made her a bit nervous but it humored her in a way.
elizza prepared herself physically, wearing her dark jeans stuffed into her ankle boots and a loose black tank top that made her blonde hair stand out. she walked out and into the streets, mentally preparing herself for a good hunt. it wasn't that difficult, seeing as though she'd practically been hunting to survive on her own before she arrived here. elizza kept a gun and extra ammo in her belt, along with her crowbar. she held a gun firming in her hand, checking the ammo even though she knew it was already loaded. it was her way of feeling that she had a bit of control over her things. after getting her gear, she headed straight for the gates where the others where gathered. elizza smirked slightly at the feel of her trusty crowbar on the back of her belt. it was the first weapon, and only weapon, the one she had to kill her husband with. it was a sick and terrible memory, but she had no choice but to keep it. now it was a sort of symbol of her strength for her, not to mention a good back up when coming close with a walker.
her mouth was shut from any remarks that dared meet her tongue, she already out of her normal state. she knew this part of her the best, almost feeling more certain and secure in this side of her even though there was a zombie eager to turn her at any moment. the woman was able to cope with this world, as she was able to cope with her abusive relationship beforehand. the world now was like abusive, maybe in another way but she was better off where influence couldn't change her. this made it easier to live than others because she's learned to adapt without necessarily knowing herself.
the blonde found herself paired up with cole armstrong. the one man that could either make her job easier or harder. elizza glanced at cole as he spoke up. she was only a step behind him as they slipped through the gate and out of the safe haven. "don't call me that," she said flatly, catching up to him. her eyes gazed over the area around them before pulling her attention back to their mission at hand. as they ran into woods ahead she stayed close enough to him so they were able to easily take out anything that harmed the other if it came down to it. elizza stayed ready with her gun in her hands, listening for any walkers as they moved on further. in truth she wasn't exactly sure how far this horde would be out.
elizza found it easier on her own sometimes, then she didn't have to worry about whoever she was paired up with. all she had to think about was herself and the environment around her. though she knew with this situation it would be insane to go out on your own. she looked to the source of that stupid moaning sound they all made and easily took out the lone straggler with her crowbar. she could have simply shot it in the head, but since it was close she didn't find the need to waste a bullet. she stuffed the tool back on her belt where she was able to grab it easily if need be. "come on," she said aloud, in somewhat of a mumble. she glanced around as they went further out, knowing now there would be plenty more where that came from.

A toothless smile subtly formed onto Cole's lips as Elizza scolded him for giving her a nickname. Before he entered the fray on various missions, Cole always tried to transform his nerves into adrenaline so they would not consume him. His sarcasm and wit was a method of his to do just that. However, as soon as he found himself outside the border of the safe haven, Cole took his job very seriously. When you were a hunter, you couldn't afford to make mistakes. Cole was no exception and knew that he had to remain focused in order to stay alive and accomplish their mission.
Once out in the dangerous open of the woods, Cole remained a few paces behind Elizza but still remained close. From his training in the military, Cole had learned that if you were paired up on a mission like this, one soldier should focus on what lay ahead of them, while the other should focus on the ground that they had covered in case they were being followed.
Reflexively, as the lone straggler ferociously approached them, Cole pointed his gun at it, preparing to eliminate the infected by shooting it in the head. However, Elizza had beat him to the punch by slaying the straggler with her crowbar. "One down...how many more to go?..." Cole murmured coldly to himself, knowing all to well that when there was one of the infected, there were always more of the infected close by.
And oh boy was Cole right. They had barely begun to stride cautiously through the trees once more when not one, but two of the infected came storming through the foliage with rapid speed, a chilling screech, escaping their deformed lips as they spotted their prey... In a flash, Cole whipped out the machete he carried on his belt with his right hand, while his left hand took over the pistol. With both aggression and a masculine kind of grace, he decapitated one of the infected before spinning around to take out the other one with his pistol. A satisfied smirk lingered on Cole's lips after his face was sprayed with the blood of the infected, a hint of wildness lingering in his eyes.
"It's two to one now. Don't fall behind..." Cole teased Elizza gruffly. Of course, Cole knew that what they did as hunters was far from a game or competition. However, Cole thought that adding a little light to the situation, could contribute to making what they did a little more bearable.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] it was all adrenaline and instincts now to elizza. it almost came like an impulse now to raise and lower her gun when needed, or to simply ram her crowbar into a walker's head. every time she passed that gate her nerves were probably long gone, being taken over by her hunter instincts. of course once things slowed down elizza found her own nerves catching up. only hoping that something would show itself again so her mind didn't go back into a deep state of worry.
killing one alone gave the woman the need to rid of every walker in view. she remembered when it used to make her angry seeing them roam around waiting for some fresh meat to walk on by. lord, she hated it all. being with anyone at that point in time probably would have helped her quite a bit. she thought she'd gone insane, which she probably had, but was still able to keep herself going. therefore a somewhat satisfied look appeared on her face as it fell limp and hard to the ground. she looked to cole at that point, only catching part of what he muttered but finding it of no importance. she was waiting for more to come storming from the same direction the loner came from. it was inevitable.
soon enough two walkers were approaching them, hungrily moving as fast as they can. elizza impulsively lifted her gun to take out one of them, but cole shot him. going for the second, it was only a matter of seconds before both walkers were down and none of her bullets were lost. elizza's arm fell back down to her side as she rose a brow at him, seeing the satisfactory he gained. she scoffed at his teasing, a smirk forming on her lips. "i'd worry about myself if i were you," she said softly now, looking over his shoulder to see a walker headed straight towards them. she swiftly shot it in the head before it got any closer. "now we're tied." she flashed him an teasing smile before looking ahead, deeper into that part of the woods.
damn trees. she couldn't stand the fact that at any moment a walker could be behind one of them close by. oh well she supposed. elizza licked at her bottom lip, hearing more walkers, as well as faint gun shots from the other hunters. the various sounds would only confuse their attention and direction. she was ready to go knock them out already. "you gonna keep points now tarzan?" elizza mused for the heck of it, wasting the moment before more walkers piled their way in.

Whenever Cole hunted, it was if he became a new person...a person that was able to switch off a part of his humanity and emotionally detach himself from the situation. It was a coping mechanism that kept him from going insane every time he made a kill. However, when he hunted with others, he found that he couldn’t let himself go entirely, not wanting to harm his ally by accident. Fortunately for today, he had a partner that was able to humor him. This both had an up side and a downside. The upside was that he was able to hold on to the piece of him that made him human, the downside was that he was feeling more on edge than usual.
After relishing in the satisfaction of taking out two of the infected at once, Cole jumped in surprise as Elizza unexpectedly shot her gun in his general direction. He felt initial irritation, before he saw the corpse of the infected she just took out. At her comment, an amused smirk formed on Cole’s lips. “Don’t get too cocky. There’s plenty more where that came from.” He replied with a wink, a hint of playfulness tinting his words before turning serious again. After all, they had a job to do.
“I thought you didn’t like nicknames?” He humored her. “Let’s ditch the point system and kill as many of these son of bitches as we can.” He replied, a certain fierce determination rising within him as more of the infected began to pile into the clearing. Cole turned his back on Elizza so that they were positioned back to back, center in a circle, giving them the opportunity to cover themselves more effectively. Without a second thought, Cole began shooting the infected, aiming for their heads as he decapitated them with his machete. He'd destroy these infect if it was the last thing he did.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] elizza had always been pretty confident and nowadays not so much. it was kind of in her nature to have a cocky sense to her, adding on to her sarcastic crude humor at times. it gave her a sense that she still had her sanity while ramming and shooting bullets through the skulls of the walking dead. it sounded crazy, but it was the new reality. so technically keeping a hold on reality was facing the zombies that threatened the lives of many. her eyes were narrowed as she readied herself for more walkers. that sense of sanity stayed with her with the help of cole. although anyone could tell this was the same woman that walked around with her crowbar handy and a light smirk on her face in the safe haven. she was hardened, losing that fun-loving side of her she was hoping to gain in the community. but lately it hadn't mattered so much, she is who she is now.
elizza rose a brow at his reaction, knowing she'd probably just freaked the hell out of him. but of course he kept his cool, she thought. she narrowed her eyes once again, looking to him as he spoke with a wink. she rolled her eyes and said in a more teasing manner, "shut up." the blonde turned away, searching the area for anything. they had to be fully ready for the load to come at them at any moment. and as of now she was more than sure she was ready for those dead bastards.
hearing his words she shrugged, not really caring about the whole nickname bit. "well, when you're referring to me, no," she responded in a smart-alec kind of way before returning to a more serious demeanor. she turned away from cole, listening to the sounds of the nearby walkers already. she wasted no time shooting a few in the head before they came into the clearing where they stood. she payed no attention to the action behind her as she heard the gunshots one by one and the fallen bodies hit the earthy floor. elizza made sure, however to keep some focus on her peripherals since the walkers were coming from one way, making their way to the haven like moths. more and more began to threaten their stance, causing elizza to have to bring out her second gun.

The fact that eliminating the infected was their new reality was a depressing thought to comprehend, but it was something that they all had to face. As far as Cole knew, a set up like Henley Falls was as good as it got in this apocalyptic world. Since living in Henley Falls, Cole had begun to accept that hunting the infected was what he would be doing for the rest of his life. He knew that not much of a future lay ahead of him, but he was determined to feel as though he was contributing towards delaying the inevitable end to all of humanity and that to him meant not only killing as many of the undead as he possibly could, but preserving the resources they still had in order to survive. Cole knew that humans would die off eventually - whether or not that meant in a century or a million years into the future, he just never thought he would be around to witness it, let alone believe that humanity would end because of a type of creature he once believed to be fictional.
Despite butting heads with Elizza on many occasions, Cole enjoyed exchanging witty banter with her, it kept things interesting...even when they were on the job, preparing to slay as many of the undead as they possibly could. However, she was similar in the way he was with knowing when the witty banter had to come to an end while they did what they had to do in order to help secure the community of Henley Falls.
As soon as their banter came to an end, Cole transitioned into his hunting mode. He swiftly set his machete back into its holster on his belt and took his second pistol into his hand. Without a second thought, Cole began shooting the infected as their numbers gradually began to increase. He didn’t look at their deformed faces, not wanting to see a shadow of who they once were, he just kept on shooting, only pausing to reload ammo into his weapons, sparing a glance or two to make sure Elizza was hanging in there.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] elizza continued to shoot, now using her second gun before more ammo was needed. she had no second thoughts as she shot away at the corpses, her mind completely focused on ridding of the infected. the last thing on her mind was how cole was holding up behind her. she supposed he was just fine, pulling her attention back to the many walkers that piled in. it was surprising how many kept on coming. hearing the shots made them move a bit quicker, like they were excited to finally have some action. the walkers were so strange that way, it creeped her out before, now they didn't even seem like they were once living people. it was like they were vicious animals. that had no conscious, their only intention and need was to eat.
the blonde found herself used to all of this a while ago. although as more threatened more of her side she was only able to shoot the two coming closer, unable to see more lurking behind them. she took out her crowbar and rammed it right into one walkers head, shooting another to her side. getting at another close one, elizza decided to save ammo and go with her crowbar at the bastard. she hit it deep in the head, pulling her tool out with a little more effort this time. in that second she hadn't the time to swing at another before it tripped right on top of her. she landed on her back with a yelp, squirming away from the walker and trying to push it off her. terror rose in her eyes at the sight of its bloody mouth and it's reek getting all over her. without really thinking whatsoever, she screamed at it, "get off me!"
elizza struggled until she had it's wrists, afraid that the hands would just rip off the tighter she pushed them away. moving her head away to try and not get bitten, she screamed out, causing more attention to her. the only attention she wanted right now was cole's and she didn't have the time to question if he was going to help her out or not. if she let go the walker would have at her neck in no time to get her crowbar. she continued to squirm on the ground to reach her crowbar or perhaps roll the monster off her, but he was a bit bigger than the others. he must have already had plenty to eats, a wonder how he was even still roamer for more. she was helpless against the others that had pulled their attention on her.

Taking out the infected was a repetitive process. They were predictable creatures as they only strived for one thing: human flesh. However, when there was a whole horde of them, keeping track of them all began proving to be difficult as time went by. Still, Cole’s focus was on eliminating this particular horde, their most immediate threat to the community. His pistols fired loudly, the impact of the bullets creating a disturbing sloshing sound as he blew off the infected’s heads. This only made the others move in faster, growling furiously, almost desperate to sink their rotted teeth into the humans before them.
Now that he was beginning to run out of bullets and knowing all too well that he didn’t have time to retrieve more from his backpack, Cole swapped both of his pistols for his machete once more. He began to slash through the infected, aiming for their heads in order to decapitate them. From behind him, he heard a yelp and instantly knew it belonged to Elizza. Even though he had the urge to turn around, it wasn’t until she screamed out before he allowed himself to look over in her direction. One of the infected was merely seconds away from having himself a meal.
Cole hesitated for a moment, having to quickly decide whether or not he would risk his own life to save her. In the past he had made a habit of emotionally detaching himself from anyone but his sister in order to survive. However, after living in a community that was all about working together in order to survive and rebuild, something within Cole reminded him that it was his duty to stand up for one of his allies. ‘Every man for himself’ wasn’t going to work anymore, so that’s when he decided to make the quick decision of taking out one of his own walker’s, before running over to Elizza to save her life.
Cole took his machete and with one swift movement, decapitated the creature that hovered over Elizza, spraying her with the creature’s blood as it’s head rolled to the side. “Come on! We’ve got to make a run for it. There’s too many!” He exclaimed, almost desperately as he pushed the corpse off Elizza and took her hand, pulling her onto her feet. Without another word, Cole began to run in the direction of the other hunters, still holding onto Elizza until they were out of the clearing. If they were to eliminate these things, they would be needing extra back up. As they ran, Cole could hear the enemy behind them, the blood-curdling growls escaping their deformed lips as they attempted to catch their prey.
A brief sense of relief swept across Cole as two more hunters appeared from behind the trees. “You have no idea how glad I am to see you guys! Let’s take these sons of bitches down once and for all!” He called as they began to form a stronger circle to take out the last of the infected. Cole glanced at Elizza once more to make sure she was both physically and mentally stable, before diving into the fray to finish what they started.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] she thought she was going to die. her worst fear in a world like this. even as she continued to fight the zombie, she knew the others would come and help feast on her. she wasn't going like this, she had to grab something quick. elizza could only hear the grumbling and hungry growls of the creature atop her, the occasional gunshot echoing through the trees, and a shuffling of feet. before she knew it, her eyes were squinted and her head was still pressing into the ground as a machete decapitated the walker, causing a spray of blood to wash over her. relief swept over her.
elizza pushed the wretched thing off her with the help of cole before scrambling to grab her crowbar. she took his hand and got up quickly. without much time to compose herself, elizza was already running out of the clearing. she took a quick look back at the nasty walkers that hobbled along slowly after them. there were way too many for two people to handle alone. she looked ahead when she felt her hand was free. storing her crowbar back onto her belt and took out her gun, loading more ammo as she ran after cole.
she found herself speechless, feeling like a deer in headlights inside even if she hadn't looked like it. elizza always seemed to manage a straight face, but that wasn't so for her mouth. being on the blunt side it was harder to control the words from spilling out her mouth. seeing a couple other hunters, cole's words expressed exactly how she felt about seeing them. cocking her gun, elizza readied herself to kill as many as those son of bitches as she could. her deep, greenish grey eyes glanced back at cole. she was alright now, she didn't need him worrying about her security at the moment - he'd done enough by saving her ass.
her anger rose with every shot, which helped her in a sense. she couldn't believe she had even let some walkers get that close to her in the first place. despite almost being a feast for the majority of the walkers, elizza was able to stay alert. they stayed in a good formation as they took out the last of the walkers. it wasn't long before they were making their last shots. she hadn't said a word with her eyes narrowed at the clearing around them, scanning for more. she hadn't let her guard down, hearing the others shoot the last around their corner. elizza let her arm drop to her side and called out to confirm that she was clear of the walkers, "we're clear here." she eyed the rotten bodies that laid decapitated and shot on the ground as she waited for the others responses.

Cole took his section of the infected out with his machete and his own strength, kicking some of the creatures away while he sliced and stabbed the enemy with his trusty knife. One by one they fell to the ground as Cole unleashed his wrath, fed up with the creatures that had taken over his life. Decapitated heads fell with a thud on the forest floor as they detached from the infected’s corpses that now lay in a disfigured heap. “Clear.” He confirmed gruffly, just after he brutally sliced the neck of his final kill, allowing his arms to rest by his sides. One by one the hunters lowered their weapons, confirming that they had each finished the job. “Mission accomplished.” Cole said sarcastically as he looked over all the corpses that surrounded them. “Now let’s get out of here.”
On the journey back to the main gates into the safe zone, Cole walked silently next to Elizza while the other two hunters took the lead, several meters in front of them. Moments of silence passed as Cole reflected on the job they had just completed and how close Elizza came to losing her life and becoming one of them. “Are you okay?” He asked gruffly, trying to seem as casual as possible as forced himself to look directly ahead. While he may have found himself legitimately concerned for Elizza, he couldn’t risk losing his tough reputation.
A part of Cole had noticed how scared Elizza had been. No matter how good you were at hunting, being that close to one of those creatures...to losing your life...would scare the shit out of anyone. When she had been pinned to the ground like that by one of those things, Cole could have left her behind. However, he was surprised and reluctant to admit to himself that he might just care about the girl enough to save her. The longer he lived in Henley Falls, the more alliances he found he gained...and he wasn’t sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] once the others confirmed that they were free of the walkers, elizza turned around and began walking back towards the gates. she still hadn't said a word, feeling a kind of satisfaction that they rid of the horde and managed once again to keep henley falls safe from the infected. sometimes elizza wondered about the others who hadn't killed in their life. they would be in for a surprise if anything were to occur. but that's when her more positive nature took place. some would think she just wasn't hopeful or was quite the pessimist, which she wasn't, she was only being realistic about their situation. walkers seemed to have to be taken out almost everyday by the hunters. the cycle would go on, elizza knew that she'd be doing this for a long time.
walking next to cole now, the blonde knew she had to say something to him. although elizza wasn't all that great at saying something nowadays. but a simple 'thanks for saving my life' didn't seem right to her. she felt that she owed him. knowing cole she knew it wasn't like him to go out of the way like that, he could have so easily let her fend for herself even though she denied it. elizza was used to being alone, but made sure she was never in these situations alone, then again she hadn't always been so sympathetic herself.
elizza kept silent for a few moments at cole's question. she looked up at him for a second before lifting a shoulder in a half shrug. "kind of a difficult question to answer nowadays," she said as a corner of her mouth began to raise with a smirk. she looked ahead at the other hunters that walked ahead of them, her smirk disappearing almost instantly. "i'm fine," she replied flatly. she was mad at herself more than anything, that's for sure. "thank you." elizza glanced at him, "by the way." in all honesty she didn't want to make a big deal of it.

As a boy, Cole always used to dream about becoming a superhero - running around, saving the world. These days, the realist tossed away those childish dreams. The world was far beyond saving. Cole didn’t view himself as a superhero, even if some of the civilians in the community of Henley Falls did. There was nothing glamourous about what he did, no glory to be gained. The only thing that encouraged him to continue what he did was the small victories (such as today’s mission) that reassured him that what he was doing was a good thing, that he was contributing to humanity’s survival.
Cole was grateful when Elizza broke the awkward silence that had dawned upon them, curving his lips into a smirk to match hers. “Well, I’d say since we’re some of the few that have managed to survive those filthy bastards, we’re doing okay. It’s our mental health we’ve got to worry about.” He replied with a silent chuckle. However, his words carried a certain seriousness behind them. He knew all to well how easy it was to lose yourself in this apocalyptic world, he had come very close on multiple occasions and had witnessed others going mad and taking their own lives just because they couldn’t deal with the world they lived in any more.
Words needed to be exchanged and all Cole wanted was some reassurance of his good deed. He had risked his own life to save her. One wrong move and Cole could have become a meal for the infected too. As soon as Elizza’s demeanor went from light to serious and guarded, Cole mimicked her, he wasn’t about to stress over Elizza’s state of mind if she wasn’t willing to talk about it. However, he was a little taken off-guard when she thanked him for what she did, he couldn’t resist. “You know, you shouldn’t be hard on yourself. What happened to you could have happened to any of us...” He remarked unpremeditatedly, referring to himself and the other hunters, unsure why he was trying to put the girls thoughts at ease. “You’re good at what you do...it was just bad timing.” He went on, despite his mind’s protests. “And you can thank me later.” He added quickly with a wink, adding a sexual innuendo as a joke to the equation, to attempt to change the subject and add a little light to the conversation.

[style=border-bottom: 5px solid #55381c; font-style: italic;] elizza nodded quietly in agreement, a smirk still playing on her lips for the time being. "true that." he was right, at least they were lucky enough to make it out in one piece, not to mention managing to slaughter the rest, doing another fine job. their mental state was surely being questioned daily as they went out to hunt down the infected and take them down. being alone for so long, many would expect elizza to have lost it by now. but they probably would not have let her in if she became a paranoid hermit or crazed maniac around any other living soul. surprisingly elizza was able to keep herself together, almost enjoying the time alone for once. anyone who was alone in this apocalyptic world had their insecurities, and elizza was no exception to that.
the blonde listened, not exactly taking in the words that spilled out his mouth. of course she was going to be hard on herself, but she did have to remember that he had risked his life to save her. they both could have been slaughtered in the hands of the walkers and it was her fault. yes, she shouldn't be putting it on herself, but she couldn't help but feel bad about it. in a way she was glad it was her and no one else, only for the fact that some of the others actually had someone back in the community. she was a bit surprised that he kept on talking, raising a brow at the compliment and eyeing him sideways.
her smirk returned with a roll of her eyes. elizza smacked him in the stomach with the back of her hand, he was bigger than she was, so she doubted it made any difference. "too bad, i already thanked you. you only get one thank you, and i think that'll be enough for now," she stated before realizing she hadn't stored her gun back into her belt. she had a tight grip on the weapon for a little while now. elizza absently pocketed her gun. what was said hadn't changed how much elizza felt she owed him. nonetheless, she felt a little better now that the conversation loosened up a bit. elizza licked at bottom lip as she could make out the gates in the distance. she was actually glad to see it. looking down now at clothes, she muttered sarcastically to herself, "we look wonderfully mucked up as usual." or more so in this case.

Cole wasn’t sure how much his words were getting through to Elizza, but he felt a little more at ease after saying something rather than going on pretending like he hadn’t even saved her life in the first place. Still, he was glad that the conversation had moved on to a less serious note. He didn’t want to be dealing with conflicting thoughts about potentially connecting to the other inhabitants of Henley Falls right now. Dealing with his mental state after a hunt was hard enough without having to deal with other thoughts going through his head.
An amused grin formed on Cole’s lips as Elizza hit him. He barely felt anything, but he also knew that she hadn’t put her full strength into it either (it was merely a playful hit after all). Cole knew from seeing Elizza eliminate the infected that she was tougher than she looked. Cole never made the mistake of underestimating her these days. “Ah, ‘for now’ being the key words.” He replied with a cunning smirk, his eyes tinted with playfulness. “I think I deserve more than one thank you, don’t you?” He joked, chuckling silently, before he sped up the pace to catch up with the other hunters.
As they approached the gates into the community, a sense of relief passed over Cole. “Mission accomplished!” He called out to the guards that were guarding the entrance into the safe haven, prompting them to open it, so the hunters could be checked for any bite marks. Cole was very much looking forward to a shower and a well deserved rest after their chaotic mission. He needed to compose his mind once more and relax for the evening, for who knew what tomorrow would bring?
