"Hello Henley Falls!
Its your friendly neighborhood disc jockey, Mad Cat, coming to you live from our very own broadcasting studio here in the library. We've got yet another day of wonderful music to fight the horde to, as well as some news aplenty about what's going on lately in the neighborhood. We'll also be talking about some very, very important tips for surviving out there in the wild. You might think you have what it takes to kick ass out beyond the wall, but we all know confidence without knowledge just gets you killed out there, so make sure you tune in!
First off for the morning, I've got a special song for all of you boys and gals out there, trying to make ends meet in the middle of this f**cked up situation. We're just getting started, and no matter how hard they try, Old Man Undead out there isn't gonna bring us down. This is What We Are, by the Material."
Madaline smiled, and cut off her mic as she leaned back in her chair.
For the past four months, Maddie Sophia Lewis had been running Henley Freedom Radio out of the top floor of the town's library, and there was no doubt in her mind it was the best thing she could be doing for the town. In her mind, the community couldn't function as well as it did without her at the helm of the station, keeping the tracks and news going throughout the day. In reality, there was no doubt that her influence wasn't quite as large as she thought, but that wasn't the point.
The point here was that she was actually helping.
She knew that there were a few people in the community who still looked down on her for sticking mostly to the radio, performing a job they thought wasn't remotely important. After all, the scavengers and hunters braved the outside of the walls every day. The Medical team was constantly at work keeping the town injury and disease free. What did Maddie do in her little studio? Well, as Madaline had said on-air on several occasions, she helped the community by keeping up everybody's spirits.
It wasn't just her saying that, either. To say that humanity didn't suffer in the face of the horror of the undead menace was idiotic, and to say that their mental health didn't suffer the worst was simply ignorant. Madaline's little system helped fight off that risk, by reminding everyone that there was still hope for the human race, something which too many people in the community needed to be reminded of. She made sure the people knew even in the hardest of times, humanity perseveres. Plus, she played music to people who otherwise probably wouldn't get the chance to listen to it anymore.
Oh, and that whole 'finding people on the radio and personally meeting them with a scavenger team to bring them back to the community, of course. But who counts that bit, right?
Luckily for her, however, the dissenters were relatively few at this point. Even if they weren't, Maddie had the support of the law enforcement guys. Nobody could really bitch with them at her back.
"Alright listeners, before we go ahead and set you off with a series of tracks for you, I want to get a few more things out of the way. First off, today's weather: excessively violence with a chance of dismemberment! You'll have to tune in later tonight for our complete five day forecast. Other than that, we've got a bit of a public service announcement from our friends over in the hunter teams. Listen kiddos, never forget the importance of periodic weapon maintenance; rifle, pistol, police baton, I don't care which. If your weapon is falling apart, the only asshole it's gonna kill is YOU. So be smart. Salvage those parts and make repairs whenever you can.
Now with all that taken care of, its time for me to sign off for the next few hours. Your almighty overlord, Mad Cat, will be back with more news and updates here at noon. Here's to another several hours of uninterrupted music.
This is Henley Freedom Radio, and we're playing nonstop music and news for all your post-outbreak needs. Can't stop the signal, baby.
Mad Cat signing off."
Cutting her mic off for a second time, Maddie got up from her chair and hit the play button on her pre-recorded playlist for the morning. With her morning messages out of the way, Madaline was left with a few hours of time to spend as needed. She had a number of things she needed to go ahead and attend to, but wasn't entirely sure where to start. While she needed a new pack of batteries for her hand held radio, it wasn't quite in dire need of replacements yet. It could hold for the rest of the day, even on the entire time. She also needed to swing by the supply center and take a look at the vehicles, and see if any of the mechanics needed assistance. At the same time, she also needed to discuss with the scav teams about heading out with them in the next few days to go look for a few things she needed for her broadcasting equipment.
Decisions, decisions.
Shrugging to herself, Maddie grabbed her messenger bag from the floor, and her canteen from the desk, and headed out the broadcasting door. Across the hall, and a quick job down the flight of stairs into the library entrance room, and Madaline was exiting out the front door. She stopped for a moment, on the steps, before making up her mind and heading towards the supply center. Might as well get those batteries and check the cars over now when its early. Might even run into someone worth talking to on the way, if I'm lucky.

Post by COLE THEODORE ARMSTRONG on Nov 16, 2012 5:08:00 GMT -5
It was another day. Another day of living...surviving. Cole was an early riser as he was a guy who had become so used to being constantly on the move. He slept enough hours each night, to get him through the usually long day ahead. It was hard work on the other side of the perimeter of the community of Henley Falls, making sure at all costs that the infected didn't sneak into their little safe haven. Cole knew that if one of those things got through the walls, the virus would spread before someone could even realize that their safe haven was in jeopardy in the first place.
Cole was already dressed and ready to head out the door, but knew that he would need to eat something in order to have the energy in case he was sent on a mission on the other side of the wall. So after obtaining a can of peaches from the pantry in the kitchen of the shared house he lived in, he sat at the dining table to listen to the radio.
He had just managed to catch Maddie's morning broadcast, his lips curving into a small smile as he casually ate his peaches straight from the can with his fork. She was an odd girl and was annoyingly optimistic at times, but Cole had to appreciate the fact that she was trying to keep the community's sense of hope alive. Hope was a very dangerous thing to lose and Cole was well aware of the consequence that would follow, if chaos ensued in their little safe haven. Chaos was what would follow if the community was deprived of hope.
Cole wasn't too fond of Maddie's music choice for this morning's broadcast, but Cole was still able to appreciate the fact that they had music at all. When the virus hit, the little things that people took for granted in their day to day lives seemed to suddenly cease existing as the human race looted and scavenged anything that they could get their hands on. Cole never took anything for granted anymore. Each can of food he consumed...each piece of music he listened to, he appreciated it all for he was unsure how long the safe haven of Henley Falls would be able to supply its inhabitants with the little luxuries from their past lives.
Once the song had finished and Cole's can of peaches had been emptied, Maddie's reminder for regular weapon maintanence sent Cole to collect his trusty pistol from his room, before setting it in his belt and walking out the front door. She was right about keeping your weapons in check. There was nothing worse about going on a mission only to have your weapon malfunction. There were occasions during his time as a hunter where his gun did just that. This would normally result in him having to decapitate a zombie with a small hunters knife which proved to be much more difficult than it looked.
On the way to the supply center, Cole saw her, Miss Broadcaster herself. Silently, he caught up to her with long strides along the quiet street. "Are you being smart too?" Cole referenced Maddie's broadcast as he lifted the hem of his green khaki jacket to reveal the pistol that rested through his belt. His lips curved into a toothless smile as his eyes looked down at Maddie knowingly as they walked.
