A sharp and metallic cocking of a gun broke the silence. The concrete jungle had turned into just that, but instead of jaguars and hippos running about, it was dead-like savage humans who ate the living. The sun was at the mid point in the sky, with few clouds to cover the city, the heat was rising, but of course not enough to scorch. It was fall outside, what little trees that resided in the city were almost bare, the orange, brown and red leaves collecting below. A boot crushed them into smaller pieces and kept moving forward, obviously not trying to be quiet.
With a single swing of his gun, he pulled the shotgun to eye level, aimed and pulled the trigger. With a loud bang and a squeal to follow afterward, a zombie had fallen over from behind an abandoned vehicle, the bullet hole in the middle of its disgusting forehead still steaming.
Alexander grimaced and then pulled his blue eyes away from the now threat-less being, lowering his gun to the blacktop beneath him. A breeze blew by, ruffling his blond hair and causing his red flannel to open up and billow slightly behind him. After letting out another breath, he swiveled and started to head back toward the group now that they were moving away from him. It was a smaller group this round, the least amount they could have. Two hunters and two scavengers, everyone else was harvesting the rest of the crops before winter came, otherwise Alex was certain they'd have more people. Getting supplies now was also important. He threw the shotgun strap over his shoulder and forced himself into a jog to catch up with the others. "What happened to sticking together?" He asked rather roughly as he caught up behind the last man. The other scavenger. It was his first raid, and he seemed more nervous than Alex would have liked. He couldn't be much over eighteen, and it was times like these that Alex wished the boy was back home, picking crops for his mother like he should be at this age. He decided to back up this one since Darius was up a few paces, guarding the persistent red head. She was fiery than Alex would have liked, but it wasn't like he could really choose who went on the raids and who didn't. She didn't seem to talk much, but when she did, she was short and almost snippy, like she couldn't stand to hear his voice or something. The tall blond tried to strike up a conversation with her, but he knew his tone was too crude for her or something... city women...
They needed a lot things now that winter was coming, so they didn't exactly have a list. It was grab whatever made sense and get the hell out. The car was parked down the street, and they had all agreed to let it rest since it only attracted attention. Alex had a score of one so far, Darius had none. The bet was on. Something the hunter buddies did every time they went out. They needed to make it some sort of game so they wouldn't get carried away with the stress of guarding others lives, or the fact that they were shooting what once were human beings. The thought never really hit Alex, then again he hadn't shot anyone he'd known personally yet. Darius claimed he shot his own cousin, straight through the mouth to his brain he had said. The country boy was used to shooting deer and other game, so he treated this as such. These things were dead, savage things that he considered dangerous.
"We need to pick up the pace if we are going to stay by red." Alex said, nudging the boy forward slightly, while keeping his eyes and ears tuned in around him. Some of the creatures moved faster than others, and Alex didn't want to let any get the upper hand. Once scavenger boy picked up a jog, they soon were up and behind Darius and the woman known as Lydia. They were approaching what used to be a Rite-Aid on a corner street. "Hold up. I say we go in there." He said, nodding his head in the direction on the store. There could be valuables, and even though he was a hunter, he had a sack strung to his back that needed to be filled. His blue eyes landed on the woman and he stared at her for a full second before looking away and keeping his eyes down the road, then back around toward the way they had just tread.

[/style] Lydia would much rather have been in a different group, to be honest, preferably one with a bit more estrogen. The sound of Alexander stomping around and making as much noise as he could made her grit her teeth. He was going to get them all killed, she swore. "What happened to keeping a low profile?" she snapped back at him, her green eyes boring up at the tall blond as he approached. Turning on her heel, she got back to business, figuring the others would follow behind her. If they did't... well, she knew how to take care of herself.
A sigh escaped her lips when she heard the sound of the other two jogging to catch up. She was surprised the infected weren't already coming at them in swarms. Just as Lydia was about to open her mouth to say something, Alex spoke up about the upcoming Rite Aid. She shut her mouth, giving him a slight look as he stared at her. Once he looked away, she made her way with the group toward the run down store. Easing her way through the door, Lydia looked around for any of the infected. She could hear one nearby. Moving forward, she drew out a long knife that she kept on her at all times. Killing the infected silently not only saved on ammo, it also attracted less attention from the other zombies in the area.
Just as the zombie was heading toward her, ready to attack, she drew the knife back and stabbed the fucker right in the head. There was bound to be another zombie or two in the store, but Lydia and the other scavenger had a job to do. It was the hunters' job to watch their backs while they gathered supplies. "Watch my back and try not to attract too much attention, will you?" she asked Alex, arching a slender eyebrow at him.
Lydia may have had a temper, but she was certainly a looker. Her long red hair was down and in curls and she wore a pair of faded jeans and black boots. Her gray, long sleeved tee shirt hugged her slender body nicely and her black, faux leather jacket kept her at least somewhat warm in the fall weather. Pulling her pack off her her shoulder, Lydia started to walk the aisles of the store, grabbing anything and everything that would be deemed useful. She didn't speak to the tall blond man, nor did she have any desire to. She had seen him around Henley Falls, flirting with a different woman every day. He was no better than the rest of them. 444 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Alex watched her moved in toward the building and he turned to look at Darius, only to turn back and see the red head stabbing a creature right in the skull. He froze, placing a hand on his shotgun and raising his eyebrows before blinking and letting go of his weapon for the time being. He nodded for Darius to lead the young blood off somewhere else to raid some place else while he followed after Lydia. He followed behind her, huffing slightly when she pretty much scolded him. "Yes, mom." He said with a grunt before following her inside. He instinctively pulled his shotgun from off his back and pulled it around by his side, ready to cock it and fire at anything too close. The hunter had several other weapons attached to him, but it was the guns that made him feel the safest. Unlike Lydia, Alex preferred to kill those things at a safe distance, he had a sharp eye and could probably shoot one between the eyes from the greatest distance than anyone in the Haven.
He got to thinking about why this woman hadn't been drooling over him yet, then he thought again and remembered she wasn't a civilian. She was harsher than most of the woman back at camp, which only made him want her to notice him more. She was different than he was used to, thus making him curious.
He watched her hips as she walked farther into the store, sliding things off the shelves and into her knapsack. He ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek and ripped his eyes away to grab a few things of his own, the soft thud of object hitting the bottom of his bag was the only real noises besides the light treading of they're footsteps. Alex finally cleared his throat and decided to try again and get her to talk to him. "Have you been on raids before?" He looked behind him, and could no longer see the opening to the store now. He wondered how Darius and the new kid were doing. Surely he'd they would hear if they were in trouble. He stopped following her for a second, distracted by the rows of vitamins, covered with a thin layer of dust. A flash back memory of him sitting at the kitchen table while eating his cereal as a child filled his head. Those stupid flint-stone vitamins his mother used to make him take. He came back to present time with a bitter taste of that vitamin in his mouth. It was tiny things anymore that caused those flashbacks. It got him thinking about his family, he wondered vaguely if they were still alive.
It wasn't until he heard a loud clang and things falling to the floor did he jump and look up to see Lydia hadn't been in the same aisle as he was anymore. He cocked his gun loudly and quickly got to the end of the row, cautiously looking around the other side. When he saw it was just Lydia and nothing else he dropped his gun to his side and gave her a look. "What are you doing? Trying to get atte-" He looked at the ground around her and realized nothing had dropped... at least not in the aisle she was in....

[/style] Lydia's brows knitted together as Alexander attempted to start up a conversation. "Do you always ask stupid questions?" Lydia asked, feeling somewhat bad afterward. The guy was just asking her a simple question and there she was, snapping at him. "Sorry..." she said, grabbing some vitamins off the shelf. She actually meant it too... a little. She would still much rather focus on their work and get out of there in one piece.
"I've been on raids before and so far, I've survived them all. I'd like to survive this one as well..." Leaving him there, she continued to pick up whatever necessities she could find. She heard the noise as well and, thinking it was Alex, she turned back to find him, only to come face to face with him. "That wasn't you?" she asked suddenly going quiet.
Slinging her bag over her shoulder, Lydia tried to remain as silent as possible. Looking down the aisle, Lydia watched as not one, but two of the infected came ambling forth, having sensed their presence. They couldn't have been the only ones in the store; Lydia could hear them. "I think we should go..." she said to Alex, backing away toward the entrance, only to stop dead and turn when she heard more behind her. "Awesome..." 444 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Alex's face dropped slightly when he saw her face. He stood up taller, watching the two creatures looking at them with hunger strewn across they're mangled faces. He nodded, swallowing slightly. His mouth suddenly felt dry, he had no idea why it wasn't like he hadn't dealt with tons of these things before. He started to back up as Lydia had, only to stop and whip his head around, finding it hard not to smirk at the red head's remark. He shifted so they were back to back. "Me and the other hunter play a game. You wanna join in?" He asked, slowly lifting the strap of his shot gun over his shoulder. The zombie that was facing him let out a weird growl, causing Alex to arch his brow. He pulled the weapon up, aimed and fired, dropping it to the ground with one shot. "That's one for me.... See who gets outside first?" He said before cocking the gun with one arm and shooting at the second zombie who had run by the aisle. He missed it, but didn't want to leave Lydia by herself. So she claimed she could take care of herself, it was still the hunters job to look after the scavenger. It was a great humiliation when a hunter failed to do his job, and Alex wasn't going to let the red head get killed because she was stubborn.
The hunter took two steps from Lydia only to get a better angle of the zombie who took cover after his friend fell. Suddenly his head snapped back toward the entrance when he heard a scream. It sounded painful, and it made Alex's heat leap into his throat. "Fuck." He muttered, he wondered if Darius and the kid were alright. Just when he regained his focus one of those fast beasts came at him, it was on all fours and lept at him, screeching. It knocked him to the floor, trying to get to his throat. Alex let out a yelp and tried to get the shot gun that had been knocked out of his grasp, while holding the face of the infected away from himself. He had honestly thought he would have been bit, and instead of grabbing for his shotgun, he wrapped his hand around the pistol in his belt and screamed as he pushed the metal inside the gaping mouth of the creature before shooting it. Blood splattered all over him and the dead weight of the thing was more than he wanted to feel.
He groaned and pushed the zombie off of him, shoved the pistol away and grabbed his shot gun. Of course Lydia wasn't anywhere to be seen, and he felt like he was going to have a heart attack now. With zombie blood all over him, he ran to the end of the aisle, sliding as he came to a stop. "Where'd you go!?" He screamed, now running down the aisles and shooting the swarm of zombies that were crowding they're way into the store. His blue eyes looked about frantically, and he heard yet another set of screams from outside. They were all in some trouble now....

[/style] "Do you really think now's an appropriate time for a game?!" Lydia asked Alex, giving him a look and turning to watch as he shot one of the zombies. "Fine," was all she said before she turned back around just in time to stab one of them in the head as it came at her.
For every zombie that crumpled to the ground, Lydia grew farther and farther away from Alex. Their distance surprisingly brought fear into her heart. Lydia may not have been the best with men, but that didn't mean she didn't have a heart. He seemed like an okay guy, aside from being a man whore, and it would be a shame to see him... well, turn into a zombie. Still, Lydia had her own skin to worry about. It wasn't long before she found the front of the store. What she saw though made her face pale and her heart skip a beat. There was a horde coming in from the front of the store.
"Yeah... we're going to have to find another way out!" she called out to Alex, hearing him calling out for her. Turning on her heel and running toward the sound of his voice, she literally ran right into him and his solid mass of muscle. The force made her stumble backward. "Game over, I win, now let's go," she said, grabbing his arm as she looked for some kind of back entrance. 444 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Alex skidded around a viral that launched itself at his neck. He stumbled and almost fell, but with flailing arms and was able to stay on his feet and fly around another aisle only to hear her voice. "Way to point out the obvious!" He shouted and then he smashed into her. She stumbled backward while he was just stopped dead. His blue eyes were rather wide at the moment, and he looked behind her with a blank expression before bringing his pistol out quickly and shooting over her shoulder to drop a zombie to the floor before it got anywhere close to her. The hunter wasn't much for knives and such, he was never good at that shit. Next thing he knew she was grabbing his arm and he had no choice but to follow. Stumbling he shoved the pistol away and quickened his stride to keep up with her running. The groans behind them were only making things worse.
"Over this way!" He shouted at her, sliding to a stop after reaching the end of an aisle. He grabbed hold of her now and was practically dragging her as he shoved his body weight against two push through doors that said 'employee's only'. For a minute things were quiet, but Alex knew it would only be a few seconds before the infected came through after them. He was panting slightly from the effort of getting away and he looked frantically for a door that led outside. Before he could even say anything Lydia was running. "What th-" then where she was running, straight toward a door that said exit. With a grunt he raced after her.
Just in that small amount of time they were in the store the sun was starting to set. The sky was a pinkish and the air was starting to get even more bitter. Alex didn't care if they caused more infects to come toward them, he needed to find Darius. He jogged away from the store, cupping his hands and shouting for his friend. "God dammit! Darius!!!!!" He shouted even louder now. He looked behind him and then back to Lydia. "Let's get back to the car to see if they went back.." He said, swallowing hard. He was worried, worried he would have to put a bullet in between his friend's eyes.

[/style] By the time they pushed through the door and out into the open, Lydia's lungs felt as though they were on fire and her heart was pounding away rapidly in her chest. Nodding, Lydia opened her mouth to say something in response when a few of the infected came out from a nearby alley. Not wanting to see just how many were behind them, she took off, hoping that Alex had the smarts to follow after her.
From a distance, she could tell that nobody was near the car. "GET IN!" she yelled at Alex, throwing open the driver's side door before jumping in and slamming the door shut. After throwing her bag into the back seat, she shoved the key into the ignition and started up the engine. "HURRY UP!" she yelled at Alex, filled from head to toe with pure panic.
They couldn't leave the others behind, but they were going to have to search for them in the car. As far as Lydia was concerned, this was a failed raid, and the first one that Lydia had ever failed at. She was filled with shame, not even wanting to step into Henley Falls with the little amount of supplies they had picked up.
Zombies were throwing themselves at the car. Alex's door had barely even closed and she was speeding backwards in reverse. Zombies tumbled to the ground and, coming to a sudden stop, she put the car into drive and drove forward, smashing into a number of zombies as she turned the wheel. Turning the car around, Lydia was speeding off when she slammed on the breaks. The force of the car squealing to a stop made her lurch forward before slamming back into the seat.
Right in front of them was the young scavenger who had accompanied them, but he wasn't quite right. They'd practically torn him apart and, as far as Lydia could see, one of his eyes was missing. For a moment, she was sick to her stomach, but the next, he was rushing toward the car. Hitting the gas, Lydia met him head on. He hit the windshield so hard before falling off of the car that he cracked it. They couldn't go back for Darius... if the scavenger was dead, then so was he.
"Are you okay? she asked Alex, though she herself was probably far from okay. For once, she wasn't being, for lack of a better word, a bitch. 444 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Alex eyed Lydia, and then saw her take off. He grunted, hesitated and then took off after her, calling his friends name once more before really digging his heels into a full out sprint to keep up with the red head. He heard the zombies everywhere, he had never experienced something like this. He'd been on raids, but all of them were never as bad as this, and he'd been in the city before. He felt like he did when this virus had first started... like he was going to get overrun. Lydia was faster than he was, then again she was lighter and wasn't carrying as many weapons. The hunter literally flung inside the car and hadn't gotten his baring before she sped off backwards. Alex flew forward and cursed loudly before throwing himself back into his seat then she stuck the car in gear and moved forward.
His eyes frantically looked around for his friend. Darius had to be around somewhere, he had to be firing off rounds and mowing down these virals, Alex couldn't let himself think otherwise. He felt Lydia slam on the brakes and he held onto his seat for dear life, gasping slightly when he too was thrown back into his seat. His icy blue eyes held the face of the younger hunter, he was frozen for a second. "No way." He muttered while they waited for what seemed like forever. His stomach lurched when the creature came at them. Lydia did what he would have done, and Alex refrained from throwing up when they ran into him.
She kept going after hitting the zombie form of the young man, and for a second he wanted to scream at her to stop. He almost had, he wanted to rip the steering wheel away from her and go back. Darius. He didn't want to leave him, but then it hit him. He had to have been gone. As they pulled away from the mob of virals Alex let himself sink into the seat of the car, his lips parted slightly and his eyes staying straight ahead of them. He swallowed, his adam's apple bounced as Lydia spoke for the first time since the calm. The hunter didn't know what to say really. His chest wasn't heaving as much and his mouth felt even more dry now. "No, I'm not." He said before letting out the shakes he had been suppressing. He was terrified.
They hadn't spoken for the majority of the ride home, Alex looked out his own window, thinking about what people would think when they returned in the shape they were in. He would go in alone, his fellow hunter was back in the city, who knows if he was dead or not. The thought made Alex sick, but they had no choice, not unless they wanted to be dead alongside the rest of the virals.
They drove in the gates and to the parking area, guards where already giving them looks since they were only the two of them. Once the car was parked, Alex just sighed. "Step out guys." A large man with a gun slung over his shoulder stated. Alex grabbed his stuff and watched Lydia grab the supply bag. As he slipped from the confinements of the car, a shooting pain carried up from his calf to just below the knee. He grunted and looked down to see red soaking through his pants. There was a rip and he could see were his leg was cut. Why didn't he recognize this before? Before Alex could even say another word men started screaming and he was tackled to the ground, screaming and cursing now, but no one was listening. All hell broke loose thirty seconds after they were out of the car, even Lydia was brought to the ground...

[/style] Lydia glanced at Alexander every so often as she drove, but remained quiet the entire time. She vaguely wondered if he had been close to the others and figured that considering she hardly knew him, her words would be of little comfort. Not to mention, she didn't quite know what to say to him. Besides, she didn't quite know if she herself was quite alright.
Shame washed over her as they made it to the gates. She had never brought back so little before. Dread filled her when they were asked to step out of the car and, before she could even tell anyone what happened, Alex was being tackled. What-" she started to say, but was unable to finish as she was knocked to the ground as well. "GET OFF OF ME!" she yelled, furiously kicking at the man who had her pinned. They had to cuff her just to keep her still.
Nobody would listen to anything she had to say as they were led to the solitary confinement building, the entrance of which was located between the two gates. While it was cut off from the rest of the sanctuary, it wasn't unsafe. Lydia wasn't exactly looking forward to twenty-four hours in there, with nobody to talk to but Alex, but there wasn't exactly anything she could do. By they reached the room, she was still fuming, but wasn't fighting with anyone.
Once they were let into the room, Lydia was uncuffed and the door was shut and locked behind them. She could hear the sounds of men with guns patrolling the halls and the sound of someone screaming in another room. The noises bounced off of the cold concrete walls as the red headed woman turned to take in the room around them. It was like a prison in there... probably because it had once been a prison, with one set of metal bunks and a toilet... right there, in the same place they were supposed to sleep. The very sight made Lydia gag a little and the small cell made her feel a little claustrophobic.
"Wait!" she called out the the guards, going to the cell door and grabbing the bars. "I don't belong in here! Please! I swear, there's nothing wrong with me! PLEASE! Don't make me stay in here!" Nobody would listen to her though. They couldn't take any risks. "UGHHHHH!" she said, wrapping her arms around herself and sliding to the floor with her back against the bars. Putting her forehead against her knees, she squeezed her eyes shut tight and remained there. 444 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Though Alex was one hell of a strong person, he wasn't about to fight something that couldn't be helped. He did at first, and it took four men to hold him down and half carry half drag him to the quarantine section of the town. The hunter wasn't looking forward to this, he knew he hadn't been bitten or anything that could have infected him. He gave up the struggling soon enough and in fact tried to make it harder for these men by going limp on them. Might as well piss them off somehow...
They shoved him into the same cell as Lydia's. He wondered how this was safe if one person had really contracted the virus and the person in the cell with him didn't. If he really did contract this virus there was no way of stopping him from biting Lydia. His blue eyes shifted toward the men locking his cell and then turning to leave without a second glance, even as Lydia called out after them. The blond man swallowed heavily, letting his eyes fall to the floor in a slightly guilty manner. He hadn't meant for anything of this to happen, but it wasn't like he could help things now. Watching her sink to the floor in her little bubble, Alex arched a brow and then decided if he opened his mouth she'd probably just tell him to shut up anyway, so he grunted and walked to the other end of the cell, easing himself to the ground with a groan before checking out his wound. He ripped his jeans where the cut was and studied his bloody leg for a moment or two before ripping off the sleeve of his shirt and wrapping his leg up. After that he stood, and looked over at the red head with a curious expression. "Might as well keep your eyes closed for a few more seconds." He muttered before stepping toward the toilet and unzipping his pants to pee.
After he searched around the cell, testing out the bed and then running his hands along the cell bars while he walked the perimeter till he reached Lydia. He eased himself down close enough to her, but not too close just in case she was really that mad at him. He sighed, bringing his knees up and resting his elbows on them. He finally turned his head and focused on her face, "Sorry you have to stay here tonight." He craned his neck to try and look down the hallway, but it was no use. His ears focused in on the screaming and his body broke out in the goosebumps....

[/style] Lydia's first reaction to him telling her not to look... was to lift her head and look. "UGH," she groaned, instantly looking away from him. Her day couldn't have gotten any worse. She tried to block out the sound of him taking a piss and didn't look up again until he sat down beside her.
"It's fine..." she said to him, letting out a sigh and resting her head back against the bars. "It's not your fault, they panicked... there really was't a need to, but I can understand... I guess." She swallowed as she looked up at the ceiling. "The top bunk is mine by the way. That way, if you turn into a zombie, I at least have some forewarning."
Looking over at him, Lydia actually smiled... a little. After a moment though, her face fell again and she looked ahead of her, taking in the small cell. "I'm sorry, by the way..." she said, her voice low. "About your friend..." With a frown written across her face, Lydia's brows knitted together and she looked to his bloody leg.
"How's your leg?" she asked him, a hint of worry in her voice. She hadn't seen the cut on his leg so she didn't know if he had been bitten or not. He had been out of her line of sight a few times, so she couldn't know for sure. "Is it...?" she asked, letting her sentence trail off. She couldn't quite finish her sentence, but she knew he would catch her drift. Was it a bite? Lydia may not have been close to or had the highest opinion of the womanizer, but that didn't mean he deserved to die... or become infected. Her green eyes stayed trained on his wrapped up leg before they finally found his face again. She arched a slender brow, awaiting his answer almost anxiously. 444 words for alexander varden. Alex half smiled at her remark. She was right in a sarcastic kind of way, but the thought still made him tense up slightly. He ran his tongue over his bottom lip, cringing slightly at the metallic taste of his blood. He must had split his lip in the fighting with the men, he hadn't noticed with all the adrenaline running through his body, that and the fact that he could be a zombie in the next few hours kept him from really thinking about anything. His blue eyes rose to meet Lydia's face when she seemed to get somewhat heart felt towards him. He kept his face blank, hiding the real emotions he was feeling inside toward Darius. His eyes fell for a moment before he drew in a slow breath. He didn't really want to start thinking about who would die and who had died, hell he didn't even know if his family had made it out alive, and they were more important to him than someone he'd met out here in this hellhole. His tone lowered as her's did, he hadn't meant it to sound dark, but that was all he could muster up when someone fell to the zombies, "Don't be sorry. Just be thankful it wasn't you." He said, raising his eyes to watch her reaction. "Too many of our friends and relatives are either dead or will die because of this virus.... there isn't enough sorry to cover them all so you might as well save it for something else. " He said this and then dropped his gaze from her, feeling slightly bad for how he used those words. She was only trying to be nice, and Alex knew this... but nice really wasn't something he was feeling right now.
He looked down at his own leg, watching it for a moment or two and then hiding the fact that he wanted to smirk. She would be a lucky one... at least he figured. "It was zombie related... but it didn't bite me. I fell on glass after the thing tackled me to the ground." He said in a bitter tone while replaying the event in his head. He watched his leg as he shifted it, while it pained him to move it, he was sure it wouldn't kill him in the long run. "I think your in the clear..." He smirked, his blue eyes seeming to light up somewhat. He looked around the room and his brows furrowed, "It would make sense for them to have some sort of weapon in here for you to kill me though. Ya know if I did turn and you didn't.... they don't think very effectively, do they?" Alex then let a small laugh out before shaking his head and looking back toward her.

[/style] Lydia merely swallowed without comment. He was right; there wasn't enough sorry to go around for everyone who had died and would die. As unfortunate as that was, there was no changing what had happened. Perhaps the ones who had died were the lucky ones. Even so, Lydia wasn't going to go down without a fight. To be honest, the thought of giving in and dying scared her a lot more than the thought of surviving in a post apocalyptic world.
As he spoke, Lydia's green eyes scanned his leg before returning to his face. Knowing that he wasn't infected offered her some relief, and not just for her own sake. "Yeah, well... those guys are either new at this or very, very stupid." For once, Lydia smiled, a very beautiful sight to see, especially when it reached her eyes.
"Do you mind if I...?" Lydia let her sentence trail off as she indicated his leg. He may have bandaged it, but she was willing to bet he hadn't made sure there was no glass in it and she hadn't seen him wash it out either. They were going to be there for twenty four hours: plenty of time for an infection to seep in. In a distant cell, a gun shot rang out and Lydia flinched the slightest bit, not having expected it. Just thinking of someone's loved one having turned... it made her feel a little sick and reminded her of her father. 252 words for alexander varden. [/style][/center]

Alex smirked at what she said and let his eyes close as he rested his head on the bars behind him. He wasn't going to be going anywhere for some time and he suddenly felt a urge to sleep. Maybe it had been the events of the day and the usage of adrenaline, whatever it was he had ended up drained. With a in take of breath he responded to her question with an opening of his eyes and looking toward her. Why was she caring so much about his leg? She had seemed so bitter before hand, every time Alex had come in contact with her she seemed to want nothing to do with him, let alone treat his wounds if he had any. He didn't know if she actually felt bad for him or she was actually going stir crazy from the short amount of time in the cell. His eyes trailed to his leg and before he said anything the gun shot went off and he too jumped slightly.
He eyed Lydia and the face she made after hearing the shot before he shrugged. She honestly couldn't make things worse, and woman seemed to be more cautious about wounds than he was anyway. "Take your best shot." He said, too exhausted to really argue about it.
He watched her come closer, and for the first time today he welcomed it. He was never one to turn down a woman putting her hands on him, but after today he didn't think he would want anyone to touch him, and not just sexually. His mind wandered to Darius and the young kid. He wondered if they had family, and if they were lost or if they had found the haven too. Alex was sure Henley couldn't be the only safe place for people to go, there had to much more out there and he hoped for his families sake they had found something like he had. Mustering up the energy to speak Alex eyed Lydia before saying, "What's your back story..." He stopped, eyeing her more carefully now, "If it's not too hard to say... I just figured since we were stuck in here might as well keep ourselves entertained." His blue eyes stayed away from his leg so he didn't have to see what she was doing....
