THE APPEARANCE
Standing at about 6'2", with a lean and muscular build, Keiran possesses a rather intimidating frame. He keeps his dark brown hair cut short and neat, something which was a requirement in his line of work before the outbreak. His eyes are a rather piercing blue, something which has been cited as one of his more memorable features. His body is practically littered with an assortment of scars sustained over the years, something which has annoyed his wife on more than one occasion. When it comes to facial hair, Keiran prefers to keep it cut down to a stubble. Keeping your hair in control might not be a priority in a zombie outbreak, but he refuses to let it go.
Some habits never die.
THE PERSONALITY
Keiran is, first and foremost, a family orientated man. Having grown up in a household where it was encouraged to love and respect your family with all your heart, it was pretty much an unavoidable thing to pick up. His father, Gregory, was very much an adherent to the long lost art of gentlemanly behavior, and tried his best to impart such values into his son. As a man, it was Keiran's duty to uphold the honor of his family, to respect your flag and country, to treat those around you with kindness, and never, ever, ever disrespect a woman. It was quite the old fashioned upbringing, and on most youth, many of those lessons might have fallen on deaf ears. For Keiran, however, his father's words were full of wisdom.
On a personal level, Keiran is a rather enjoyable man to be around. He often comes off as extremely charismatic and charming, something which has helped him quite often in his line of work. Though the horrors of the outbreak have gradually began to wear down the walls of his personality, Keiran still remains a rather respectable man. When confronted with hardship, he maintains a calm and collected exterior, and tries his best to stay as diplomatic as possible when thrown into situations where conflict is unavoidable. He is not, however, above using violence to accomplish his goals. Indeed, he is perhaps better suited to doing so then using his words. There has been more than one fellow survivor who met Keiran and his family out there in the countryside and tried to take what they had, only to end up face down in the dirt because they wouldn't back away.
Despite this exterior that he gives off to his family and those who he crosses, all calm and collected, Keiran is far less at peace under the surface. Conflicted feelings of his time spent with the Agency tear at his soul, alongside the building stress of having to protect his family from a world that seems hell bent on killing them. Throw in the fact he's gradually beginning to doubt he'll ever bring his family to safety, and Keiran isn't doing to well on the inside.
For his family's sake however, he won't let them know. He can't let them know.
THE HISTORY
NATIONALITY: American
Born in San Diego, California, Keiran was the only son of Gregory Howell, a former soldier-turned-police officer, and his wife Megan, a prosecutor. Growing up, Keiran's childhood was kept relatively quiet, thanks to the efforts of his father to keep his son on the straight and narrow. Having himself been raised to be a proper gentleman, Keiran's father attempted to impart his philosophy onto his young son. For the most part, he was quite successful, and the few times Keiran did get in trouble, it was never for anything truly serious, something which his father was mostly willing to forgive. As long as he did good in school, and minded his manners, Keiran was free to do with his time what he felt was right.
Luckily for Keiran, doing good in school was something he was pretty good at doing. Unlike many kids his age, Keiran actually enjoyed school, as it was something he could excel at, especially compared to his peers. While he had no doubt he could have done great doing sports like football or basketball, his father's constant reminders that school came first drove him to take care of that which mattered more. Many kids would have rebelled against their parents if pushed to succeed as much as Keiran was, but the respect he held for his father kept him from doing anything of the sort.
After high school, Keiran turned his eye to further education. Having idolized his father since childhood, it wasn't much of a surprise when he opted to work towards a Criminal Justice degree. Accepted into the University of California, Berkeley, Keiran spent four years working at his degree. Keiran graduated in 1995, and immediately began looking to start a career.
However, during his time spent in college with the goal of joining the police force, Keiran underwent a change of heart. Instead of joining the police force, Keiran decided he wanted to join the military. His father was extremely disappointed to hear this, as he could not understand why his son wanted to abandon the path he had started walking on. Keiran's response was to inform his father that being a cop was something he'd love to do... but he wanted the excitement he felt the military could give him after spending his life doing nothing particularly exciting.
Enlisting in the closing months of 1995, Keiran joined the Army Rangers as a Specialist, thanks to his four year degree. Over the course of his first six years with the Rangers, Keiran earned his Ranger Tab, graduated from both Pathfinder School and Mountain Warfare School, and completed SERE and HALO training, all in an attempt to gather as much training as possible. After all, if he wasn't actively fighting overseas, he might as well get himself qualified enough that if he was brought overseas, he'd stand out.
In the early months of 2001, while stationed at Fort Lewis, Keiran came across a recruitment notice in the base's newspaper for SFOD-D, or "Delta Force." Having heard stories about Delta throughout his service from fellow soldiers who had served alongside them prior to Keiran's enlistment, the Ranger decided that he would attempt to join this unit, believing it to be a chance for him to get ahead even further. He was accepted into the selection course, much to his joy. The selection course was not easy, however, and it certainly pushed Keiran to the limits when going through it. In the end, he managed to pull through, and complete the course without failing. Upon his completion of the course, he was informed he was going to be accepted for further training, something which excited him greatly.
However, his experience with the selection course made him realize that his coming training was going to be extremely serious business. His desire to succeed simply to get ahead quickly transformed into a need to succeed for himself, to show that he had what it took to push through.
Keiran dove into the Operator Training Course feet first, beginning the first stages of the sixth month training program. For those six months, Keiran was put through test after test, and learned skill after skill. As time went by, and more and more of the applicants dropped out, it became obvious that his decision to take as many courses as possible as a Ranger was one of the few things keeping him from joining the drop outs, such was the intensity of the training. At the end of that six month period in late August, Keiran emerged from the program as one of only a dozen remaining applicants. He had made it.
He was an Operator.
And fortunately for him, it wasn't a moment to soon. On September 11th, the United States was hit with a coordinated terrorist attack which shocked people across the world. Practically every active duty military unit was placed on full alert, realizing that it was only a matter of time before a reprisal was authorized. And authorized it was, when it was announced that the military was to invade Afghanistan in October. Keiran's unit was thrown into the fray as one of the first Delta units on the ground.
Over the next two years, Keiran fought in the Middle East, first in Afghanistan, and later, in 2003, in Iraq. He took part in several operations against HVT's in both countries, as well as assisting in several other operations alongside Ranger units and Special Forces. In 2003, Keiran was one of several SFOD-D operators present during the killing of Uday and Qusay Hussain.
In late 2003, Keiran's service ended. When attempting to decide whether or not he should reenlist, and continue his service in the Middle East, Keiran was reminded of something he had heard back in Afghanistan about how the CIA was always looking for soldiers of his skills. After some deliberation, Keiran decided he would inquire about a possible career in the CIA. Not only would it probably pay higher, but there was still some inner child in him that got giddy at the idea of working for the stereotypical "super spy" group.
Keiran's application to join the CIA as a Paramilitary Operations Officer, using his experience with the Rangers and SFOD-D as his selling points, and filling all of his professional contacts with fellow Delta operators. In short time, he was contacted by the Agency, and was informed that they were extremely interested in hiring him. Thrown through several background checks and interviews, Keiran found himself hired by the Agency, and quickly thrown into their specialized training systems. It was here that his skills quickly became noticed, and upon completion of his training, he was given a position as a Special Activities Division officer.
For about a year, Keiran worked with the SAD, performing various operations both in a team and by himself, completely his objectives every time. After this year, however, Keiran's record caught the eye of his superiors, and he was reassigned to a recently created group of SAD officers with the goal of assassinating terrorist leaders in any country, around the globe. As time went on, 'terrorist leaders' became 'enemies of the state,' which in turn became 'targets of potential risk.' This position led to Keiran being utilized not only outside the US, but also inside its borders to eliminate targets which could prove potentially dangerous.
Keiran's personal life was affected greatly during this time with the CIA. Due to the level of secrecy surrounding his position in the CIA, he was not permitted to inform others of his career. Instead, he simply informed everyone who came into his life that he was a member of the FBI, and was constantly being brought back to Washington D.C. for his job. It was a simple cover, and still produced respect from people he encountered, though it did annoy Keiran that he wasn't allowed to inform even his family.
In 2005, Keiran's personal life took a turn for the more interesting. While attending a Christmas Party hosted by one of his few civilian friends, Matt Dawson, Keiran was introduced to Matt's sister-in-law, a woman by the name of Elizabeth McLean. Keiran was completely blown away by Elizabeth, who was simply one of the most perfect women he had ever laid eyes on. She was beautiful, she was interesting... he felt himself drawn to her, and he couldn't pull away. It couldn't have came as a surprise to anyone when he asked to take Elizabeth out a few days after the party, only for it to lead to more and more meetings. It wasn't long before Keiran had to say he had found the one.
After being together for a year, Keiran and Elizabeth decided that it was time to take their relationship to the next level, and marry. Before they were able to, the two discovered that Elizabeth was pregnant, something which Keiran was absolutely ecstatic about. When they were finally married, the pregnancy just seemed to make everything that much better in his eyes. He was in love with a beautiful woman, and he had a child on the way who was sure to be the most amazing child in the world. Coupled with a career which he absolutely enjoyed, Keiran felt like the happiest man on the planet.
Though his wife was not exactly thrilled with his career, especially when he told her he worked for the CIA, and not like the FBI like everyone thought, she was still supportive. She did try to convince him on occasion to change his job, to try something much less dangerous, but he couldn't just up and leave the Agency. Not only did the job pay better than anything he'd be able to get with his degree, but he enjoyed it.
And secretly, he wasn't sure if he could leave. He had gotten so far into what he did, it was possible Keiran would be considered too dangerous to leave alive. He knew things that could damage the CIA's reputation.
In 2012, six years after his marriage to Elizabeth, disaster struck the capital of the United States. A virus outbreak, the likes of which the world had never seen, exploded in D.C. Keiran, alongside so many of his fellow officers, were recalled from their homes and other assignments to assist the CIA with an attempted quarantine. Unfortunately, in the weeks that followed, it became quite apparent their efforts were in vain. The outbreak spread across the United States, and infections were being reported in other parts of the world. Keiran was tasked with guarding government interests alongside the members of his team as it spread.
However, Keiran couldn't obey his orders. When news came in that the virus had hopped the Mississippi River, and was spreading west rapidly, Keiran gather what supplies he could and completely abandoned his duties. To his displeasure, Keiran was forced to kill several of his team when his superiors realized what he was doing, and ordered him to be terminated. Running from the surviving officers who were now trying to kill him as well as the infected, Keiran convinced some of his more sympathetic CIA friends to get him out of the capitol, and fly him back home.
By the time he managed to get back to San Francisco, the city had been hit with the virus, and it was completely in chaos. Keiran fought his way through the city to his family's home, only to arrive as infected battered down the door of his home. Absolutely not about to let his wife and son die just as he returned home to save them, Keiran eliminated all of the creatures in his home, before finally embracing his wife and child. Instructing his wife to grab what she could, Keiran packed all of the weaponry he kept hidden in his home into the car with the supplies his wife gathered and his family.
With his family safe and supplies at their disposal, Keiran managed to drive his way back to the airport where his comrades were to be waiting. Unfortunately, they had been over ran while waiting for him, and the plane infested with the creatures. With Keiran's escape plan for his family cut off, he turned the car around and sped out of the city as fast as he could.
Since then, Keiran and his family have roamed the countryside, looking desperately for a home. With the majority of his contacts dead or missing, Keiran has nowhere to turn to. With his wife now pregnant with their second child, and their supplies running low, Keiran hopes to find somewhere, anywhere they can stay.
They can't go on for much longer this way.
